Panama were on the verge of earning the first World Cup point in their history, having withstood sustained pressure from Ghana for much of the match. However, a goal deep into stoppage time shattered their hopes, as they left the field empty-handed after a heartbreaking defeat.

Ghana secured a 1-0 victory in their Group L opener thanks to a dramatic winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in the fifth minute of added time. The result earned the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists all three points from their first match of the tournament.

In the match played in Toronto, Yirenkyi found the net just moments before the final whistle, converting a chance created by substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante. His late strike proved decisive and sealed Ghana‍‍`s victory.

Despite the result, Panama controlled much of the contest. They enjoyed 62 percent possession and registered 11 shots compared to Ghana‍‍`s eight.

Substitute goalkeeper Benjamin Asare played a crucial role in preserving Ghana‍‍`s clean sheet. Introduced in the second half, he made three important saves, including two from close range inside the penalty area.

Panama‍‍`s best opportunity of the first half came as early as the second minute. Cecilio Waterman fired a shot from the centre of the box after a low cross from Amir Murillo, but Ghana goalkeeper Ati-Zigi reacted quickly and dived to his right to make the save.

Ati-Zigi was forced off at half-time after sustaining injuries in several collisions during the opening period. His replacement, Asare, went on to become one of Ghana‍‍`s key performers.

As the match appeared destined for a draw, the decisive moment arrived in stoppage time. Brandon Thomas-Asante collected a loose ball on the left flank and drove forward before delivering a dangerous pass into the box. Yirenkyi got a touch on the ball and guided it into the net, breaking Panamanian hearts.

Ghana played the match without midfielder Thomas Partey. The player, who is facing rape allegations in England, was unable to join the squad after reportedly being denied a visa to enter Canada.
